State Police Bill Reflects National Consensus, Not Political Expediency, Senate Says

ABUJA — The Senate has defended the passage of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, characterising it as a result of national consensus instead of political opportunism.

The upper chamber said the initiative arose from necessity, not political expediency, emphasising that the proposal was motivated by Nigeria’s deteriorating security environment.

In a statement released on Sunday, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) said that establishing state police was an urgent national priority that could not be postponed due to political considerations
