ABUJA — The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has voiced concern about the Federal High Court decision that annulled the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The organization warns that the ruling may erode political pluralism and heighten fears of excluding opposition parties before the 2027 general elections.
On Sunday, the rights group released a statement signed by National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, asserting that the Federal High Court’s ruling in Lokoja extends beyond a mere legal matter and raises essential questions about the robustness of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the prospects of multiparty democracy.
HURIWA noted that the decision has sparked widespread concern among civil society organisations, democratic stakeholders, and Nigerians dedicated to constitutional democracy.
“The association warns that any perception that judicial processes are being weaponised for political purposes poses a grave danger to constitutional democracy,” the statement said.
