On Monday, former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) while an investigation into alleged financial misappropriation during his time in office was underway.
Sources inside the anti‑graft agency indicated that the visit relates to the ongoing probe into his tenure.
In November 2024, the EFCC arrested Okowa on allegations that he diverted roughly N1.3 trillion during his eight‑year governorship of Delta State.
He was also accused of using public money to purchase properties in Asaba, the state capital, and in Abuja.
After his arrest, Okowa claimed that all state funds were “judiciously used” during his tenure and said he was not afraid of the investigation.
He stated, “I am not worried, and I have spoken about it. I am not afraid to be investigated,” adding that he believed the media was conducting a trial.
He also said his administration worked within available resources to provide public services, adding, “I may not be a saint, but I know I stepped in there as governor with a full hope and desire to help people.”
Okowa governed Delta State from 2015 to 2023 as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and later became the party’s vice‑presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, running with Atiku Abubakar.
In April 2025, he switched to the All Progressives Congress (APC) together with his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and other state political figures.
