President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday that he said will keep the United States at the forefront of artificial intelligence.

The President explained that the order is necessary to support the country’s vast AI talent and innovation while reducing “overly burdensome regulation.”

Trump noted that advanced AI capabilities strengthen America but also introduce new national security challenges that require coordinated action across departments and agencies.

The Committee on National Security Systems must, within 30 days, prioritize cyber defense by taking swift action consistent with the order “Promoting Advanced AI Innovation and Security.”

Likewise, the Secretary of War is directed to prioritize the cyber defense of information systems at the Department of War within the same timeframe.

The Secretary of Homeland Security and relevant officials have been instructed to issue operational directives for the cyber defense of civilian federal government information systems.

These directives will cover the establishment or expansion of federal programs and cybersecurity services that enhance AI‑enabled defensive tools, and will facilitate such tools for agencies, state and local authorities, hospitals, banks, and local utilities.

A key element of the order is a request that AI companies provide the federal government with access to covered frontier models, cybersecurity, insider‑risk, and intellectual‑property protection, use, and nondisclosure requirements.

Models must be submitted for review—subject to appropriate confidentiality—30 days before release to trusted partners or the public, a reduction from the previously proposed 90‑day review period.
