In the early hours of Saturday, a fatal single‑vehicle accident occurred on the busy Oshodi‑Apapa Expressway at the Charity Bus Stop, inbound toward Iyana Isolo, Lagos. The incident claimed the life of the driver of a Honda Pilot sports‑utility vehicle (SUV).
Preliminary reports indicate that the driver suddenly lost control of the SUV, causing the vehicle to overturn repeatedly before coming to a stop. The impact was severe enough to trap the driver inside the heavily damaged wreckage, where he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Rescue and recovery operations were carried out swiftly by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) in cooperation with officers of the Nigeria Police. LASTMA personnel, who were monitoring traffic on the Iyana Isolo axis at the time, responded immediately to the emergency.
Working alongside staff from the Mosafejo Police Division, the teams extricated the deceased from the wreck while maintaining traffic flow and preventing secondary collisions along the corridor.
“After the rescue and recovery were completed, officials from the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) transported the remains to a public mortuary in accordance with statutory and public health protocols,” confirmed LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare‑Oke.
Bakare‑Oke added that the wrecked Honda Pilot SUV has been handed over to Mosafejo Police officers, who have begun a comprehensive investigation to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident.
He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and offered heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time.
In a statement, Bakare‑Oke urged motorists across Lagos State to exercise maximum vigilance, adhere to speed limits, and follow all traffic regulations and road safety protocols—especially during late‑night and early‑morning travel when visibility and reaction times may be reduced.
“Motorists are strongly urged to avoid reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding, and any traffic infraction that could lead to avoidable tragedies on our roads,” he said. “The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount. No journey is so urgent that it justifies compromising safety.”
