President Donald Trump said the U.S. is close to finalising a peace agreement with Iran and that the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within two or three days if the deal is signed.
Speaking on the tarmac at JFK airport after watching the NBA Finals, Trump stated, “It will open up immediately upon signing.” He added that the agreement would prohibit Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump claimed there are no “sticking points” preventing a deal, although issues such as strait management, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and Israel’s conflict in Lebanon have stalled negotiations.
He said, “We are very close to having a very, very good strong, powerful deal. If we go and bomb – which we can do very easily if we want and we spend another two or three weeks bombing – they’ll have nothing left whatsoever, but you won’t have the strait open for months.”
“If we do the bombing, a lot of people are going to be killed. Who wants to do that? I don’t. And we’ll have a signed document that is actually stronger than doing the bombing,” Trump added.
Trump also blamed Iran for a recent U.S. Army helicopter crash near the Strait of Hormuz, stating the United States must respond. A drone boat rescued two Army aviators aboard the Apache helicopter, which went down near the waterway that Iran has effectively closed during its conflict with the U.S. and Israel. Trump posted that both service members are safe and uninjured and that the U.S. must, “of necessity, respond to this attack.”
He has repeatedly threatened a full‑scale bombing of Iran, though he has withdrawn those threats, likely recognizing that new strikes would keep the strait under Iranian control and could spark a dangerous escalation against U.S.‑allied Gulf states.
The strait’s effective closure has driven global energy prices higher, including in the U.S., where the war remains unpopular.
