South Africa defeated South Korea 1‑0 on Wednesday, securing a place in the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history—a remarkable comeback after a disappointing opening loss.
The Bafana Bafana, competing in a World Cup for the first time since hosting it in 2010, were largely dismissed following a 2‑0 defeat to Group A winners Mexico in the tournament’s opening match.
They drew with the Czech Republic and, thanks to Thapelo Maseko’s second‑half goal, emerged as the second‑placed team in Monterrey, effectively winning a de‑facto shootout with South Korea.
South Africa coach Hugo Broos said the achievement was hard to describe.
“We scored that goal, and it was 20 minutes of heart‑beating and hoping the game would finish soon,” said the Belgian.
“So yes, we are in the second round. It’s historic. But I’m very happy for the guys. I’ve worked with them for five years. And what we did in those five years is amazing.”
South Korea coach Hong Myung‑bo shocked fans by omitting captain Son Heung‑min—widely regarded as Asia’s greatest player—from the starting lineup.
