Senegal became the first African team in history to score five goals in a men's World Cup match.
This achievement came after their 5‑0 rout of a 10‑man Iraq side in the final Group I match.
Following defeats to France and Norway in their opening games, a win – and a decisive one – was required to keep their progression hopes alive.
Under manager Pape Thiaw, the team recorded the largest win ever achieved by an African nation at the tournament.
Ismaila Sarr, Pape Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye each scored and provided assists, giving the Teranga Lions a chance to reach the round of 32.
The last occasion a team had three players both score and assist in a World Cup match was Germany's 7‑1 victory over Brazil, featuring Toni Kroos, Sami Khedira and Thomas Müller.
