Police Warn Against Lawlessness Following Court Ruling in Osun Local Government Dispute

On Friday, the Osun State Police Command called on residents and political stakeholders to stay calm after the Federal High Court in Osogbo delivered a judgment on the long‑running local government dispute in the state.

It noted that tensions had risen after the ruling and that it was closely monitoring the conduct, statements and activities of all parties involved.

In a statement released in Osogbo by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, speaking for Commissioner of Police CP Ibrahim Gotan, the Command emphasized that established legal procedures exist for enforcing court judgments, with appeal provisions where needed.

The statement read: “The rule of law remains the foundation of our democratic society; therefore, all parties are enjoined to strictly comply with established legal procedures when seeking to enforce judgments.”

The police cautioned against taking the law into private hands, arguing that actions outside the legal framework could jeopardize the peace and stability the state has enjoyed for years.

Ojelabi said, “The Command will not tolerate lawlessness and extrajudicial actions that will jeopardise the long‑existing peace of the state.”

The Command urged political actors, their supporters and the public to remain law‑abiding and avoid actions that could heighten tensions.

The police spokesman said, “We urge all political actors, their supporters, and the general public to remain calm, law‑abiding, and maintain peace.”
