Police Reject Old Video Claiming Bandits Attacked in Imo

The Imo State Police Command has dismissed a viral video that claimed bandits attacked communities in the state, and it has warned the public against spreading false information.

In a press statement, the Command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, said it had seen the circulating video and identified it as an old clip produced by “mischief makers” and “purveyors of false information.”

The Command called the footage “false, misleading, and deliberately designed to create unnecessary fear, panic, and apprehension among the people of the State.”

The police clarified that the video shows an attack that took place on 25 July 2025 at Ndi‑Ejezie, Umualaoma, and Ndiakuwata Uno Communities in Arondizuogu, Ideato North LGA, carried out by unknown gunmen led by Ifeanyi Okenta, popularly known as Gentle the Yahoo.

According to the Command, the incident resulted in loss of life and does not represent a recent attack in the state.

“Following the incident, the Imo State Police Command, in synergy with other security agencies, carried out intelligence‑led operations that led to the arrest and prosecution of some suspects, while others were neutralised during exchanges of gunfire with security operatives. Efforts remain ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the group,” the release added.

Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso responded to the development by urging Imo residents to disregard the false video and refrain from sharing unverified information that could cause fear and undermine public peace and security.

He warned that individuals who deliberately create, circulate, or amplify false security information will be identified, arrested, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

Bosso used the opportunity to reassure residents of the Command’s unwavering commitment, in partnership with other security agencies, to safeguard lives and property across the state. He encouraged the public to remain vigilant, rely on official information channels, and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
