Military pensioners targeted by fraudsters seeking BVNs and ATM information

Military pensioners across Nigeria are confronting an escalating threat from fraudsters who pose as pension officials to obtain sensitive personal and banking information.

The Military Pension Board (MPB) has issued a warning about an identity‑theft scheme that targets retirees and their families. The Board cautions against revealing Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), National Identification Numbers (NINs), bank account details, and ATM card information to unauthorised parties.

According to a statement from the Board’s Public Relations Officer, Aliyu Mohammed, the MPB has received reports of individuals impersonating pension officials and agents who seek confidential data from unsuspecting pensioners. The Board has therefore issued an urgent fraud alert to retirees and their families.

“The Board has received reports that some individuals are demanding personal details such as Bank Verification Numbers, National Identification Numbers, bank account details, ATM card information, and other confidential data,” Mohammed said.

The Board warned pensioners not to engage with unauthorised individuals, groups or online platforms that request such information.

“Pensioners are strongly advised not to disclose such information to any individual, group, or platform that is not officially authorised by the Military Pensions Board,” the statement added.

The Board also clarified that it does not employ third parties to collect personal or banking information for the processing of pension-related benefits.

“The Military Pensions Board does not engage third parties to collect pensioners’ personal or banking information for the purpose of processing loans, pension payments, gratuities, or any other benefits,” it stated.

Retirees and their families are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious requests for information to the appropriate authorities.

“Any request for such information from unofficial sources should be treated with caution and reported to the appropriate authorities,” the Board warned.
