On Wednesday morning, a routine day at Ijaiye Ojokoro Junior College in Lagos turned chaotic when a teacher staged a prank that was mistaken for a real kidnapping.
The incident occurred on Tigbetigbe Street, Ojokoro, during the school’s National Awareness Day—a day observed in all Lagos State schools to promote public safety topics. The chosen theme for the day was banditry.
To illustrate the subject, one teacher dressed as a bandit and approached the assembly area. According to an eyewitness, the moment the teacher stepped out of his vehicle, panic erupted.
“The students, thinking he was a real bandit, fled in fear,” the witness recounted. “Students from the other three schools in the same complex heard the cries of “Bandits! Bandits!” and joined the rush. Teachers also ran for safety, and the entire school complex and nearby streets were thrown into confusion.”
Parents, believing a genuine attack was underway, hurried to the schools to retrieve their children. “I was on my early morning walk when I saw a group of students running frantically. When I asked what had happened, they told me that bandits had invaded their school and were killing people,” another eyewitness said.
Concerned, the witness went to the school complex and spoke with a principal who chose to remain unnamed. The principal explained that the panic was caused by the teacher’s attempt to dramatise the banditry theme.
Joshua Ekong, a resident near the school, confirmed that the event caused widespread panic and confusion in the area.
