Colombia defeated World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan 3‑1 in their opening Group K match on Wednesday, with Bayern Munich striker Luis Diaz delivering a standout performance at the Estadio Azteca.
Diaz supplied an assist, scored a goal and even struck the post as Colombia held off a spirited Uzbek side before 80,824 fans in Mexico City.
His precise lofted pass set up Daniel Munoz, who headed in after 40 minutes. Uzbekistan answered when Abbosbek Fayzullaev netted the team’s first World Cup goal by heading a rebound from a saved volley by Eldor Shomurodov.
Diaz restored Colombia’s lead with a shot that the Uzbek goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov should have saved. In the final moments, Jaminton Campaz finished the game with a clean header, giving Colombia a 3‑1 victory.
The result places Colombia at the top of Group K, which also includes Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, who drew 1‑1 earlier.
