The Kano State Government, through the Shariah police Hisbah Board, has allocated N1.5 billion for a mass wedding initiative that will bring together 1,500 couples across the state.
At a press conference in Kano on Monday, Hisbah Board Commander‑General Aminu Daurawa announced that the Board will oversee the ceremonies, with preparations already underway.
He said the program is designed to curb social vices and to help indigent couples who cannot afford the costs of marriage.
Each couple will receive N1 million to purchase items such as a bed, mattress, bedsheet, pillows, a cupboard, and food supplies.
In addition, the bride will be given N100,000 for a small‑scale business venture, while the groom will receive N100,000 to contribute toward the dowry.
“Mass Wedding is one of the promises made to the people of Kano State by His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which he has now fulfilled,” Daurawa said. “He has provided the sum of N1.5 billion for 1,500 beneficiaries, each of whom will receive N1 million to be used for furniture, food items, and empowerment.”
The Commander General also announced that the Hisbah Board has issued a guiding rule for the couples, prohibiting divorce in any of the marriages without involving the Hisbah Board. The Board’s chief urged couples to confirm their genetic compatibility before marriage, citing the risks of having children with sickle cell disease.
