The Kano State Government has declared Tuesday a public holiday to celebrate the start of the 1448 Islamic New Year.
The announcement appeared in a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya.
He explained that the government approved the work‑free day so residents could observe the significance of the new Islamic calendar year.
In the message, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf congratulated Muslims in the state and nationwide on the arrival of a new year, which begins with the sighting of the crescent moon of Muharram.
He urged residents to use the occasion to reflect on their conduct over the past year and renew their commitment to good values.
“The Governor calls on the people of the state and the Muslim Ummah to reflect on their actions over the past year and to use the occasion to offer special prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity for the state and the country at large,” the statement read.
The governor also urged citizens to pray for peace and economic growth, particularly as the country confronts various challenges.
He further assured the public that his administration remains committed to enhancing welfare through policies that will spur development, improve infrastructure, and support social wellbeing.
Following the declaration, all government offices, public schools, and state‑owned institutions will stay closed on Tuesday, with normal activities resuming on Wednesday, June 17, 2026.
