Foden, Palmer to miss out on England World Cup squad

Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are expected to be left out of England’s 26‑man squad for the 2026 World Cup, according to a BBC report. The final list is due to be announced by manager Thomas Tuchel on Friday.

Harry Maguire is also likely to be omitted. The Manchester United defender expressed his disappointment in an Instagram post, saying: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I wish the players all the best.”

At 33, Maguire will miss the tournament that will be played across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Manchester United teammate Luke Shaw is also expected to be excluded, despite a strong season that sparked calls for his inclusion. Shaw was named in Tuchel’s 55‑man provisional squad, but Newcastle defender Dan Burn and Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly are reportedly ahead of him.

Ollie Watkins is anticipated to make the squad after helping Aston Villa win the Europa League. Ivan Toney is also set for selection following a prolific spell with Al‑Ahli, where he scored 32 goals in 32 league matches.

Conversely, Morgan Gibbs‑White, who has scored 14 goals this season alongside Watkins and Dominic Calvert‑Lewin, is likely to miss out. Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori are also expected to be omitted.

Arsenal winger Noni Madueke is projected to be included, joining teammates Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze. The potential exclusions of Maguire, Tomori and Colwill increase the chances of John Stones being selected, despite an injury‑hit season with Manchester City.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another player expected to miss the squad, while Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo is likely to retain his place after returning for recent friendlies. Jordan Henderson is also expected to keep his spot, having become a regular under Tuchel.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will begin on 11 June and will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
