The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained a Nigerian‑American citizen in connection with a cross‑border vehicle import fraud that allegedly involved more than $320,000 (approximately ₦434.9 million).

The agency released this information in a statement posted on its website by the Media and Publicity unit on Friday.

According to the statement, the suspect was apprehended by EFCC Ilorin Zonal Directorate operatives when he returned to Nigeria.

The commission said the suspect, a dual citizen of Nigeria and the United States, is under investigation for alleged criminal breach of trust and for obtaining money under false pretences.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is said to belong to a U.S.-based syndicate that specialises in defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians by posing as buyers and importers of vehicles from America.”

“Investigators reported that he allegedly advertised and circulated photographs of a 2024 Mercedes‑Benz G63 AMG to prospective buyers in Nigeria, claiming he would purchase and ship the luxury vehicle to them.”

Findings also show that two victims allegedly paid a combined total of $320,000 for the vehicle.

The commission said that one victim, Ikechukwu Ifeabunike, reportedly paid $145,000 through an intermediary, while another victim, Godson Azubuike Amans, allegedly paid $175,000 for the same vehicle.

Further investigations uncovered a prior criminal record in the United States linked to the suspect, allegedly involving the illegal acquisition of vehicles.

The commission said the suspect would be arraigned in court once investigations are concluded.
