A bandit attack on Odo‑Ere, the headquarters of Yagba West Local Government Area in Kogi State, has claimed the life of a civil defence officer and resulted in the abduction of his daughter.
Sources identified the victim as Mr Ayo, a member of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). He was shot in the head on Monday during the assault on the community.
A source confirmed that Mr Ayo was rushed to a medical facility but was declared dead on arrival. His remains have since been placed in a mortuary as a “Brought‑In‑Dead” case.
The attackers also seized his first daughter before fleeing the area, heightening concerns among residents after the latest security breach.
However, the abducted daughter reportedly escaped unharmed from the bandits’ hold on the second day, in the early hours of 9 June 2026.
The news brought cheers and jubilation to the community.
“Mr Ayo, who was shot in the head, died instantly while the daughter was whisked away into the bush. However, luck smiled at the daughter as she managed to escape from the bandits’ gulag and has since been reunited with the family,” a community source confirmed.
Police have begun an investigation into the incident. “Investigation has commenced as the tactical team of the security agencies have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators,” a police source said.
