Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta revealed that defender Gabriel Magalhães stepped forward to take the decisive penalty in the club’s UEFA Champions League final against Paris Saint‑Germain on Saturday.
The North London side were eliminated after a 1‑1 draw at the end of 120 minutes and a subsequent penalty shoot‑out. Kai Havertz had given Arsenal hope during normal time, while Ousmane Dembélé scored for PSG, keeping the match level and forcing the shoot‑out.
In the shoot‑out, both Gabriel and Eberechi Eze missed their spot‑kicks, allowing the French champions to claim the European title.
Speaking after the match, Arteta said Gabriel had expressed a desire to take the final penalty, noting that the team had prepared extensively for such a moment.
“Gabriel wanted to take the last penalty. We trained for that moment,” Arteta told Fabrizio Romano.
Despite the disappointment, Gabriel has had a strong season with Arsenal, playing a key role in the club’s Premier League title‑winning campaign that saw them finish ahead of Manchester City.
