Thomas Tuchel’s 26‑man England squad for the World Cup sparked debate, as several high‑profile players were omitted.

Manchester United centre‑back Harry Maguire expressed shock and disappointment at missing a defensive spot, while midfielders Phil Foden (Manchester City) and Cole Palmer (Chelsea) were also left out.

Both players are highly regarded, yet neither had a standout season or consistently reached their peak form, leading to their exclusion.

Tuchel said the main reason was the need for a balanced squad. “We preferred Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham for the No.10 role and chose specialist wingers for the wide areas,” he explained.

During a press conference after the announcement, Tuchel was asked whether he feared leaving behind players of Foden’s and Palmer’s calibre.

He replied, “No, I don’t fear because I am very confident in the group we have chosen.”

Tuchel went on to describe the difficulty of making the selections: “Very difficult decisions, painful conversations. It’s hard to explain to the players. We’re trying to build a balanced squad. If everyone were selected, we would have to leave some extraordinary talents at home.”

“Either way, if we picked all those names, some other big five names would have been out and we would be talking about these names. It comes with the job. I like these kinds of decisions, even if it sometimes takes weeks or months to clarify them. I think they bring clarity and a necessary edge.”

“Did they do anything wrong? No. Could they be in camp? Yes, 100% sure. But for some of them, it is just the number of players in a certain position. We didn’t want to play them out of position too much and wanted to give them a clear role, which leads to difficult and sometimes hard choices before the tournament.”
