Former Wolverhampton captain Troy Deeney criticized England’s wingers after the team’s 2-0 win over Panama at the World Cup.
England manager Thomas Tuchel made five changes to the lineup that had drawn 0-0 with Ghana earlier in the week, but the adjustments did not improve the Three Lions’ fluidity.
Morgan Rogers struggled to find rhythm in the altered midfield with Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka offered only fleeting displays of their true potential.
Saka, starting for the first time in the tournament, appeared for just over an hour before being replaced by teammate Noni Madueke.
Madueke, a former Chelsea player, was also ineffective; his first touch, aimed at an unmarked full‑back, overhit the ball and sent it out of play, which Deeney found disappointing.
Deeney told CBS Sports, “Take a look at the possessions lost: 14 for Saka, 20 for Rashford, and 7 for Madueke.”
He added, “That’s acceptable if, while playing, you are truly incisive with your passing and executing clever flicks around the corner.”
He continued, “If you observe that match, Madueke, upon his introduction, kicked the ball past an opponent only to send it out for a goal kick. Should I be thrilled about that?”
