Glorify God alone, by Funmi Komolafe

Genesis 1:27 (KJV): “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

It is a well‑known fact that the Almighty created the first man and woman, provided them with food in the form of vegetables and animals, and met their needs before they even asked.

God then gave them a directive, as recorded in verse 28: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”

Many interpret “replenish the earth” simply as “have more children.” The Lord’s intention, however, was to ensure that humanity would continue to exercise dominion over all creation after Adam and Eve were no longer present.

Isaiah 46:9‑10 reminds us that “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none like me. Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.”

Creation of humanity is a unique act of God alone.

Recently, several couples have experienced the breaking of barrenness. After years of waiting, they have given birth to multiple children, and social media has celebrated these miracles. Some achieved pregnancy through in‑vitro fertilisation (IVF), while others conceived naturally.

When people ask why a birth after IVF is still a testimony, we can point out that doctors, though knowledgeable, are not infallible. Doctors can die, and patients can die, even when they receive advanced medical care. The Bible in Daniel 1:17 (NIV) says, “To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.” This illustrates that the knowledge we call science ultimately comes from God.

It is appropriate to congratulate those who have overcome barrenness, but we must also acknowledge God’s role in any scientific breakthrough.

The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) carries the motto “We care, God heals.” If science answered all questions, why would LUTH maintain that motto?

In the past month, families have been blessed with multiple children, fulfilling a prophecy by Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who recently stated that God would visit families with multiple babies.

We have previously reported on a woman over 50 who, after many unsuccessful attempts, underwent IVF and delivered a baby girl. The doctor involved attributed the success to God, saying he had not done anything different, only that God chose to answer the woman through him.

Unless God breathes life into the union of husband and wife, He also alone breathes life into babies born through IVF. Doctors may note that not all successful IVF attempts result in live births; some embryos are aborted. This is a known possibility, though no woman wishes to experience it.

Exodus 23:26 (KJV) states, “There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfill.” This reminds us that not every pregnancy leads to motherhood.

Therefore, regardless of scientific advances, we still need God’s intervention to nurture a pregnancy from conception to delivery.

One woman underwent IVF three times, losing the embryos—including a set of twins—each time. She continued to pray, and after almost 15 years, she gave birth to a baby boy.

Medical procedures can fail if God does not breathe life into them. For example, a scan may show two embryos, yet the woman delivers three.

In marriage, both partners share the burden of barrenness, though it is often more visible for women due to emotional factors and a sense of urgency. God is not bound by time; He can end a yoke whenever He chooses, knowing the best moment to bless a couple.

No challenge is too great for God, but we must present our cases and remain steadfast in prayer.

King David wrote in Psalms 20:1‑3, “The LORD hear thee in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend thee; Send thee help from the sanctuary, and strengthen thee out of Zion; Remember all thy offerings and accept thy burnt sacrifice; Selah.” In this context, offerings and burnt sacrifices refer to days of prayer and fasting, which open pathways for answers.

Let us appreciate science while giving glory to God. Jesus said in John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.”

God can replace years of tears, loneliness, and mockery with blessings that even the testifier may find surprising. Let us always give God glory.

Hallelujah!
