Officers from the Violent Crimes Response Unit (VCRU) of the Abia State Command have detained a man who was filmed punching a woman in the face.

The suspect, reportedly from the Abia North region of Abia State, was seen in the footage striking the woman with hard blows and threatening to kill her in the Ogbo Hill area of Aba.

In the video, the woman raised her hands in a plea for mercy and struggled for help while the man shouted at her and delivered additional blows to her face.

The audio recorded the man repeatedly shouting, “Ichoro mgbue gi, Ichoro inwu,” which translates to “Do you want me to kill you? Do you want to die?”

In response to the public outrage, the VCRU, led by CSP Emeka Amanchukwu, arrested the suspect on Saturday.

Police officers located the suspect and he is now in detention.

The Peoples Democratic Party candidate for Aba Central Constituency in the 2027 election, Anastasia Odochi Uchenna, condemned the assault, describing it as horrific.

She urged the prosecution of the suspect and appealed to the Abia State government and relevant agencies to ensure the victim receives adequate medical care.

When contacted by the publication, DSP Maureen Chinaka, Police Public Relations Officer of the Abia State Police Command, said the investigation is ongoing.
