Security tensions have risen in Eastern Sokoto after the Nigerian Army confirmed it had received intelligence indicating that notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his followers are carrying out weapons training and tactical drills in parts of Isa Local Government Area, Sokoto State.
The report has heightened concerns among residents of border communities that have long endured repeated bandit attacks, kidnappings, and cattle rustling along the Sokoto–Zamfara corridor.
Intelligence indicates that the alleged training is occurring in several communities—Bingabale, Bafarawa, Bargaja, and Gebe—all located within the Eastern Senatorial District, an area that has been a known operational zone for Turji’s network.
Security sources also claimed that the exercises involve armed fighters loyal to Turji, including close associates such as Illa Manawa and Dodo—who is reportedly his younger brother. The group is reportedly conducting military‑style drills and weapons handling with newly acquired arms.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the weapons could be part of a recent supply delivered to the group, raising concerns about an increase in firepower among armed gangs in the region. Reports also point to newly recruited fighters with advanced combat experience, which security observers warn could enhance the group’s operational capacity if left unchecked.
The alleged drills are reportedly occurring in remote border communities linking Sokoto and Zamfara States—a region that has remained difficult to secure despite ongoing military operations under Operation Fansan Yamma.
Additional intelligence indicates that the group may be using night‑vision equipment and other tactical gear that it has allegedly acquired. Investigators have also linked suspected commanders such as Kachalla Haru Dole and Kachalla Ibrahim Chimo to the movement and coordination of arms
