Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has named Cape Verde his most impressive African team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The small nation is making its debut at the tournament this year.

They held European champions Spain to a 0‑0 draw in their opening match.

The result earned them widespread praise from fans and pundits alike.

Other African teams have also produced notable performances: Ghana beat Panama and Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador.

Morocco drew 1‑1 with Brazil, DR Congo held Portugal to a 1‑1 draw, and Egypt shared the spoils with Belgium.

South Africa, Algeria, Senegal and Tunisia, however, lost their first games.

“What nation has impressed me the most? For me, I have totally become a Cape Verde fan,” Oliseh said.

“I’m even thinking of buying a ticket to go and visit the country once. Because the way they play, the organisation, this is no joke. This is something that has been worked upon. What I felt when I went to the AFCON was that they intentionally did not come to the AFCON.”
