Olawepo-Hashim pledges Naira revival to ₦525/$

ABUJA — Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a senior figure in the Accord Party and former presidential candidate, announced on Thursday that he intends to bring the Nigerian naira back to a rate between ₦500 and ₦525 per U.S. dollar if elected president in 2027. He attributed the current economic difficulties in Nigeria to the present administration.

The statement was made during a political event in Dawaki, Abuja, where supporters gathered to reaffirm their backing for his presidential bid and to learn more about his economic strategy.

Hashim declared that achieving the targeted exchange rate would be a cornerstone of his economic agenda, arguing that the existing government has failed to stabilise the economy.

“I will restore the value of the naira to between ₦500 and ₦525 to one United States dollar,” he said.

He also criticized the government for exacerbating living conditions through rising inflation, unemployment and a decline in purchasing power.

Hashim further accused the government of interfering with opposition parties, claiming that elements within the administration were attempting to weaken parties such as the Accord Party, ADC and PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.

He warned against what he described as efforts to suppress democratic competition, stating that no government can permanently override the will of the people.

“No individual can permanently suppress the will of the people or obstruct the course of democracy,” he said.

The Accord Party leader also voiced concerns about internal disputes within his party, noting that recent developments have raised questions about transparency in its leadership processes.

Hashim said his political ambition is motivated by a desire to improve living standards, noting that many Nigerian families struggle to afford basic needs, including education.

He called for stronger investment in job creation, economic growth and youth development, describing them as essential to national stability.

He urged his supporters to remain peaceful and committed, encouraging continued participation in the democratic process despite political challenges.
