Kim Jong Un announced an “exponential” expansion of North Korea’s nuclear arsenal after visiting a newly opened atomic facility, according to state‑run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
The country is believed to operate uranium‑enrichment sites at Yongbyon, Kangson and Kusong.
KCNA reported that Kim visited a “newly‑inaugurated nuclear materials production factory” on Wednesday and described an “ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate.”
North Korea rejects U.S. pressure and maintains it will not abandon its nuclear weapons, calling its path “irreversible.”
During the visit, Kim said the “weapons‑grade nuclear materials production capacity more than doubled during the past five‑year course.”
Analysts note that the eight missile tests conducted this year may reflect Pyongyang’s attempt to exploit weakening international norms to solidify its nuclear status.
Although the facility’s exact location was not disclosed, experts believe it is likely the newly completed uranium‑enrichment plant at Yongbyon.
Yang Moo‑jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies, suggested that if the site is indeed Yongbyon, it could also serve a propaganda purpose.
He added that North Korea’s “deliberate showcasing” of its expanding nuclear capabilities signals to Washington that denuclearisation is not negotiable, especially amid U.S.–Iran nuclear talks where Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile is a key issue.
Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, said the key takeaway from Wednesday’s inspection is that North Korea is scaling up nuclear material production to meet growing demand.
He noted that the country has already unveiled a large number of tactical nuclear weapons, creating a “growing need to produce more nuclear warheads” for deployment on tactical missiles.
North Korea withdrew from the Non‑Proliferation Treaty in 1993, has conducted six nuclear tests, and is subject to multiple United Nations resolutions. It is believed to possess dozens of nuclear warheads.
