The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Jigawa State has begun a flood‑mitigation and emergency‑preparedness sensitisation campaign in anticipation of the 2026 rainy season.

State director Ahmad Tijjani Ibrahim announced the initiative at a press conference held Monday at the NOA Conference Hall in Dutse, the state capital.

He said the campaign was prompted by forecasts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which predict flooding in several states and thousands of communities nationwide, including Jigawa.

According to Ibrahim, recurrent floods result from climate change and human activities such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages, inadequate drainage systems, construction on waterways, and deforestation.

The agency will station Community Orientation and Mobilisation Officers in all 27 local government areas to educate residents—particularly those in flood‑prone communities—on preventive measures and emergency preparedness.

He urged residents to heed weather advisories issued by NiMet, maintain proper environmental sanitation by clearing blocked drainages, and plant trees to help reduce flood risks.

The NOA director also called on the media to support the campaign through ongoing public enlightenment.

In addition, Ibrahim encouraged eligible residents to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise being carried out by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The CVR, which began on May 11 and will conclude on July 10, 2026, aims to register citizens aged 18 and older who have not yet been registered, as well as those who missed previous registration drives.

He explained that the exercise also allows voters to transfer registration, replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and correct biodata errors.

Ibrahim stressed that voter registration is a fundamental civic duty and urged citizens to obtain their PVCs so they can actively participate in the democratic process.
