Ogun ADC in crisis as parallel primaries produce Ogundipe, Lawal as governorship candidates

By James Ogunnaike, Abeokuta

The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is facing an escalating internal crisis after rival factions announced two different governorship candidates following parallel primaries held in Abeokuta ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Both factions addressed the press on Monday, naming Collins Ogundipe and Jimi Lawal as the winners of their respective parallel primaries conducted across the state’s 20 local government areas.

In one exercise, overseen by a six‑member Ogun ADC Governorship Primary Committee chaired by Adeniyi Adams, Ogundipe was declared the party’s candidate. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials were reportedly present during the vote. Three aspirants—Jimi Lawal, Collins Ogundipe, and Abolaji Odusina—contested in this primary.

The committee reported that Ogundipe received 9,370 votes, defeating Lawal who scored 6,812 votes, while Odusina garnered 4,349 votes.

In a separate development, a rival faction conducted its own primary and declared Jimi Lawal the authentic candidate. This exercise was supervised by Adebimpe Elijah Adelowo, Secretary of the Ogun Primary Election Committee.

Results announced by this group showed Lawal winning with 19,418 votes, Ogundipe receiving 5,775 votes, and Bolaji Odusina scoring 4,825 votes.

Both factions have forwarded their results and related election materials to the national leadership of the ADC in Abuja for review, ratification, and further action, deepening uncertainty over the party’s governorship ticket in the state.
