A new Ebola outbreak has been confirmed in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with at least 65 deaths reported by African health authorities.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention announced the situation on Friday, stating that 246 suspected cases had been identified, including four deaths among patients confirmed by laboratory tests.
Officials say the outbreak began in Ituri Province, which lies in the eastern part of the country.
In response, Africa CDC is closely monitoring the situation and has already organized an emergency high‑level coordination meeting. The meeting brings together representatives from the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan, and international health partners to enhance cross‑border surveillance, preparedness, and response efforts.
Ebola virus disease, first identified in 1976, is a severe and highly contagious hemorrhagic illness that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.
Without rapid containment, the disease can cause severe bleeding, organ failure, and death.
Over the past fifty years, Ebola outbreaks across Africa have reportedly caused about 15,000 fatalities.
The most lethal outbreak in the DRC occurred from 2018 to 2020, resulting in nearly 2,300 deaths.
Health authorities are urging residents and neighboring countries to remain alert and to report suspected cases promptly in order to curb the virus’s spread.
