Police warn of rising sexual and gender‑based violence cases in Edo

Edo State Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika warned that cases of sexual and gender‑based violence (SGBV) are rising sharply throughout the state.

He made the statement at a press conference held in Benin City on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

Agbonika noted that, over the past two months, police have detained more than 23 individuals suspected of rape, defilement and other SGBV‑related offenses.

“This trend is painful, unacceptable and deeply concerning. Violence is never a solution to any disagreement or desire. Rather, it destroys lives, families and communities,” he said.

He pledged that the police will continue to pursue offenders vigorously and work to secure justice for survivors.
