Meet ‘Trionda,’ the AI-powered FIFA 2026 official football

Each FIFA World Cup has historically sparked interest in the design of its official football. The Telstar, used in 2018 in Russia, and the Brazuca, used in 2014 in Brazil, were early examples. The 2010 Jabulani, favored by attackers like Uruguay’s Diego Forlán but criticized by goalkeepers, remains a memorable case. In 2022, Al Rihla—meaning “the journey” in Arabic—introduced semi‑AI performance functions, adding offside technology and live data sharing.

For 2026, Adidas has unveiled Trionda, an AI‑powered ball that promises to surpass previous models. According to Adidas, the ball is “a connected piece of engineering designed to handle the unique physics of North American altitudes while celebrating a historic three‑nation host union.” The name combines the prefix “tri,” referring to Canada, Mexico, and the United States, with “onda,” the Spanish word for wave, symbolizing the unity of the host countries and the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf coastlines that frame the tournament.

Trionda departs from earlier designs by featuring only four panels—the fewest ever used on a World Cup match ball. This reduction minimizes seams, creating a more consistent surface. The ball also incorporates deep seams that function like golf‑ball dimples, stabilizing air drag and producing a predictable flight path. Subtle iconography of the three host nations is embossed on the surface.

Perhaps the most striking feature is the ball’s requirement for a charging station. A fully charged ball can operate for up to six hours, covering a full 90‑minute match. A motion sensor, positioned at the ball’s center, records every touch, kick, and deflection in real time, transmitting data 500 times per second to the VAR center. FIFA claims this technology enables semi‑automated offside detection, pinpointing the exact moment of a kick with millisecond precision and resolving tight offside calls within seconds.

Trionda also incorporates symbolic and aesthetic elements. Each host country is represented by a distinct color—red for Canada, green for Mexico, and blue for the United States. The ball is manufactured entirely with water‑based glues and inks, featuring a maple leaf, a golden eagle, and a five‑pointed star. Gold embellishments pay tribute to the FIFA World Cup Trophy. Adidas describes the ball as its most visually playful design to date, crafted with both in‑field and broadcast visual considerations in mind.
