…Seeks Memorial Prayers for War Victims
By Steve Oko
The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) praised residents throughout the South‑East and other parts of the former Eastern Region for taking part in Saturday’s sit‑at‑home observance, which marked the 59th anniversary of Biafra’s declaration of independence.
The group said the level of compliance reflected the people’s dedication to remembering those who died during the Nigerian Civil War and the events surrounding the Biafran struggle.
In a statement released on Saturday, MASSOB leader Comrade Uchenna Madu thanked residents for observing the anniversary of the May 30, 1967 declaration of Biafra by the late General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.
According to Madu, the observance demonstrated respect for the history of the civil war and the sacrifices of those affected by the conflict.
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to the people of Biafra for their commitment to honoring the memory of General Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and the anniversary of the declaration of Biafra,” Madu said.
He noted that the level of participation in the sit‑at‑home exercise underscored how important the remembrance of that period is to many residents.
Madu also reaffirmed MASSOB’s commitment to pursuing its objectives through non‑violent means, stressing that the group would continue its advocacy in line with its stated principles.
“We salute your resolve and dedication as we continue to strive for a better future for all Biafrans through MASSOB’s principles of non‑violence in self‑determination activism,” he added.
The MASSOB leader further urged churches across the South‑East to organize memorial services and special prayers in honor of those who died during the civil war, saying such programs would offer opportunities for reflection and remembrance of the victims of the conflict.
The annual May 30 observance is marked by pro‑Biafra groups as a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives during the Nigerian Civil War, which lasted from 1967 to 1970.
