Abia State Police Command announced that it has arrested two suspects in connection with a conspiracy, attempted child theft, and possession of hard drugs.
The suspects, Nzubechi Chinagorom and Chinonso Chibundu, are natives of Olokoro in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State.
In a statement signed by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer, the Command said that its officers apprehended the suspects after receiving actionable intelligence and working with Olokoro vigilante personnel.
According to the statement, the suspects went to the home of Miss Amarachi Chinyereugo and tried to forcibly take her two‑week‑old baby girl.
DSP Chinaka added that Nzubechi Chinagorom allegedly stabbed the nursing mother with a kitchen knife during a struggle, causing the baby to fall and hit her head on the ground.
The police spokesperson said that the suspects fled the scene and ran into a nearby bush when the mother cried out for help.
She added that the suspects were later caught at a bus stop where they had apparently gone to obtain hard drugs.
“The mother and child were immediately rushed to the hospital, where they received treatment and have since recovered,” Chinaka said.
“The suspects were apprehended, exhibits were recovered, and an investigation has been conducted at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The suspects will be charged in court on 2/06/2026,” she added.
