Crisis looms in Kano NDC over alleged structure takeover

By Henry Umoru, Abuja

A new crisis is emerging within the Kano chapter of the New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as foundation members have accused the party’s presidential running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, of allegedly seizing party structures and barring other members from electoral opportunities ahead of the 2027 elections.

The members claim that Kwankwaso’s actions and statements have weakened the party’s unity, stability and growth, especially during state congresses where disputes arose over control of the Kano State party structure.

In a statement signed by NDC North‑West Vice Chairman Mohammed Rabiu Serina and Kano State Chairman Hussaini Isa Mariga, the members noted that a resolution had previously been reached after intervention by the party’s National Leader Seriake Dickson. The agreement allocated 60 percent of the Kano State party structure to Kwankwaso and his supporters, while the remaining 40 percent was to remain with the party leadership.

They allege that, despite this agreement, Kwankwaso later denied access to nomination forms for party members outside his political movement, Kwankwasiyya, effectively excluding other aspirants from contesting various elective positions.

According to the statement, nomination forms for the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senate seats and governorship positions were not distributed to party members outside the faction loyal to him, contrary to the earlier agreement.

The group also said that repeated appeals by party leaders and interventions by the National Working Committee failed to resolve the dispute, despite efforts to promote inclusiveness and fair participation.

They maintain that the party belongs to all its members and should not be controlled by any individual or political movement, insisting that internal democracy and inclusiveness must guide all decisions on nominations and party activities.

The statement further noted that, before Kwankwaso joined the party, foundation members had independently built the Kano structure and continued to fund party activities, stressing that contributions and loyalty should be reflected in party decisions.

The aggrieved members urged the national leadership to intervene and ensure that the principles of fairness, consultation and collective ownership are upheld.

They reaffirmed their willingness to work within the party framework but insisted that cooperation must be based on mutual respect and adherence to agreed structures.
