Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour has acknowledged that coping with the disappointment of a knee injury that dashed his 2026 World Cup dream has been challenging.
The 24-year-old limped off during a friendly win against Curacao at Hampden Park and will miss the upcoming tournament. He has been replaced in the midfield rotation as the team reshuffles for the tournament.
Despite the personal heartbreak, Gilmour via his Instagram post, stated that he has shifted his focus to supporting the squad as they prepare to face Haiti, Morocco, and Brazil in Group C.

“I haven’t got the words to describe how I’m feeling right now.
“Being so close to a childhood dream of mine, to play in a World Cup, and now it has been taken away from me with an injury.
“It’s been a tough one to get my head around.
“Your support and kind messages over the last few days mean the world to me and haven’t gone unnoticed, so thank you so much.
“I’ll see you all back doing what I love again soon but until then, let’s get behind the team and cheer them on.
Throughout his professional career, Gilmour has established a reputation as a highly technical, deep-lying playmaker. His game relies on elite tactical awareness, press resistance, and precise distribution in tight spaces.

Son of former Scotland captain Darren, Fletcher was initially one of a few young players brought in to train with the World Cup squad ahead of the Curacao match.
He was given his debut at Hampden on Saturday, with his dad and twin brother Jack watching on from the stands at the national stadium.
Fletcher impressed and despite just a handful of senior appearances for his club, he’s now part of the group at the finals.
