The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology and anti-doping laboratory inside the MKO Abiola stadium in Abuja.
This was disclosed in a statement by the National Sports Commission (NSC) on their official X handle on Wednesday.
According to the NSC, the Federal Government has approved a major nationwide sports infrastructure revamp aimed at repositioning Nigerian sports and restoring key facilities to international standards.
Aside the installation of VAR technology and anti-doing laboratory, the projects also include upgrades to tracks, floodlights, media and athlete facilities, construction of a High Performance Centre, training pitches, redevelopment and development of the 200 room athletes’ hostel into a proper hotel, upgrades to medical facilities including new medical equipments.
It also include development of a sports center to provide additional offices and spaces for all the sports federations etc and rehabilitation of critical sports infrastructure across the country.
The initiative also extends to direct support for states hosting future National Sports Festivals and development of other elite sports infrastructure across the country, the construction of mini sports centres nationwide.
There is the establishment of sports facilities across some tertiary institutions in furtherance of the of development of sports centres of excellence across tertiary institutions as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots and school sports development.
The NSC said the unprecedented investments is the first phase and are designed to position sports as a driver of youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development, and national unity.
