The Nigeria Customs Service’s Ogun 1 Area Command reports that it intercepted 10,126 parcels of Cannabis sativa valued at N743,400,000 in duty paid across various locations in the state.
Area Comptroller Mr Olukayode Afeni announced the find while handing the seized material over to Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s Idiroko Special Area Command, Mr Williams Ekundayo, on Tuesday.
Afeni described Cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana, as a psychoactive substance that can have severe effects on users.
He emphasized that the operation was a preventive measure rather than a routine seizure.
According to Afeni, without such intervention society could confront a surge of drug‑related crises that would further strain an already overstretched health‑care and rehabilitation system.
“Its availability would have spiked drug‑related health issues and overwhelmed our strained psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities,” the comptroller said.
Upon receiving the material, Ekundayo called the action another milestone in the joint effort to combat drug abuse and trafficking.
He praised the customs officers involved and reiterated the need for greater coordination between the NDLEA and the customs service.
Ekundayo warned individuals involved in such illicit activities to cease their operations, stating that “if they persist, they would surely be arrested by law enforcement agencies.”
