Nollywood actress Blessing Obasi has responded to criticism from some Christian viewers after portraying a lesbian character in the Netflix series Blood Sisters 2.
In an interview with Yanga FM, Obasi clarified that an actor’s job is to embody various characters, and that her role does not reflect her personal beliefs or lifestyle.
She said the character was part of a story based on real societal issues, emphasizing that the production’s aim was to tell a story rather than promote any particular lifestyle.
“We are telling a real story about things that truly happen,” she explained.
Obasi noted that some people questioned why a Christian would accept such a role. She replied that actors routinely step into diverse roles to bring narratives to life.
“They said, ‘As a child of God, how would I take such a role?’ And I said, ‘We are telling real stories of what happens in the prison,’” she said.
She added that the production team approached the subject with sensitivity.
“The production company was sensitive enough not to depict the horridness of it. They are not in support of it (lesbianism), but they are telling the story,” Obasi explained.
Despite the backlash, the actress said she focuses on the positive feedback she receives from viewers.
“There is so much positivity. I put my mind on that,” she said.
Obasi also shared that she meets harsh comments with compassion, suggesting that those who criticize may be dealing with personal struggles.
Instead of responding negatively, she said she prays for them and hopes they experience God’s love.
In Blood Sisters 2, which debuted worldwide on Netflix on June 5, Obasi portrays Mimi, a powerful inmate in the prison where Sarah and Kemi are held. Her character has attracted attention for its depiction of same‑sex relationships and power dynamics within the prison environment.
