The Anambra State Government has arraigned eight pastors who were arrested in Onitsha, Awka and other parts of the state. The charges stem from alleged violations of the state’s 2025 Homeland Security Law.
The clerics appeared before a court at the state judiciary complex in Awka on Friday.
The defendants are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.
State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, is leading the prosecution on behalf of the government.
Media Adviser to the Anambra State Governor, Mr. Ejimofor Opara, described the clerics as “fake” and said they are being prosecuted for allegedly breaching provisions of the recently enacted security law.
The arraignment follows the state government’s ongoing campaign against individuals accused of engaging in activities deemed harmful to public order and security.
Last year, authorities also arrested several native doctors accused of promoting get‑rich‑quick practices. While some were prosecuted and convicted, others remain awaiting trial.
