Manchester United legend Gordon Strachan has voiced concerns about Xabi Alonso’s decision to take the Chelsea managerial role, describing it as a “deepest part of the Atlantic” and highlighting the intense pressure that comes with the position.
Alonso, who was linked with high-profile appointments at Real Madrid and Liverpool, ultimately accepted a four‑year contract to lead Chelsea.
During a conversation with Andy’s Bet Club, Strachan said he worries the former midfielder may face significant challenges.
“I think Chelsea fans, first of all, you’ve got an academy, why don’t you use your academy? And secondly, Chelsea fans, like most fans, only want to win games of football. I don’t care who you are. So again, don’t come up with your philosophies and other things, just win games of football,” Strachan said.
“I think if Alonso just goes, ‘Right, you’ll need to give me two or three really experienced players here.’ If you want the kids to improve, there’s nothing better for them than standing beside great experienced players every day, learning from them on the pitch and off the pitch. That’s the only way.”
“You can also learn bad habits if you get bad professionals in. But that’s the best way of learning, is getting good people as a manager around you to set standards at the club.”
