Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, has detailed his plans to address unemployment, underemployment and corruption in Nigeria.
Speaking on Saturday after being announced as the NDC’s candidate for the upcoming general elections, Obi emphasized the importance of supporting Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as a key strategy.
“Our large pool of talented youth remains largely unemployed,” he said. “The official unemployment rate of 4 % grossly misrepresents the reality; actual underemployment and unemployment in Nigeria exceed 30 %, with youth unemployment above 40 % – among the highest in the world. This requires urgent action.”
Obi outlined a plan to boost MSMEs through targeted tax incentives, special interest rates and accessible funding in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, entertainment, sports and distribution. He added that these measures would be both measurable and verifiable.
On corruption, the former Anambra state governor said Nigerians will see a tangible, verifiable reduction in corruption and the baseline costs of governance. He added that public resources would be managed with absolute transparency, prudence and accountability, ensuring that every naira spent delivers demonstrable value to citizens.
