ABUJA — Soldiers of the Guards Brigade, Nigerian Army, detained 14 people who were suspected of posing as officials of the Nigeria Forest Guard while allegedly carrying out unauthorized arrests in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Security officials said the suspects were taken into custody at about 5:20 p.m. on June 5 by troops of the 7 Guards Battalion during a routine patrol in the Mpape area of Bwari Area Council.
Sources reported that the group was intercepted while allegedly conducting arrest operations and claiming to be personnel of the Nigeria Forest Guard. Their activities aroused suspicion, prompting the soldiers to intervene, conduct preliminary questioning, and search the suspects.
During the operation, a round of 9 mm ammunition and other items were reportedly recovered from the suspects. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the ammunition and the group’s claimed affiliation.
The 14 suspects are currently in military custody and are expected to undergo further interrogation and possible legal proceedings.
Security agencies have urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of individuals claiming to represent government security organisations.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining security in the FCT and to ensuring that individuals involved in impersonation or related criminal activities are brought to justice.
