Former Portugal international Bruno Alves said that football idols such as Cristiano Ronaldo are not limited by time and that their influence is everlasting.

Alves also added that some of Ronaldo’s critics have not achieved anything significant in football.

In an Instagram post, the former defender noted that criticism should come only from those who have performed at a higher level than the Al‑Nassr forward.

He further stated that Portugal will stand behind Ronaldo in every circumstance.

As reported by Goal, Alves said: “Respect, idols are timeless! Many individuals discuss football without having made any contributions to the sport. Criticism should come only from those who achieve more! Cristiano, we believe in you regardless of the situation.”

Ronaldo faced heavy criticism after he failed to score in Portugal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup match against DR Congo, and he also did not register a single shot on target, resulting in a 1‑1 draw.

This unusual performance prompted fans and analysts to suggest that the former Real Madrid star is hindering Portugal’s progress in the tournament. Nevertheless, the 41‑year‑old has repeatedly shown his ability to defy his critics in challenging circumstances.

He will aim to correct his previous outing in Portugal’s upcoming Group K match against Uzbekistan on Tuesday, June 23. The match will be played at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
