The Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Ibadan (UI) has confirmed that a 300‑level female law student was abducted while returning from a religious conference in Imo.

SUG President Mr Temidayo Adeboye released a statement in Ibadan on Friday, identifying the victim as Tomisin. He said she was taken along with seven other people.

Tomisin was travelling with Mr Uwem Cosmos, the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, and other conference participants.

They were on their way back to Ibadan after attending the Scripture Union National Conference at the Camp of Faith, Okigwe, Imo.

According to Adeboye, Tomisin serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and as Vice President of the fellowship’s University of Ibadan chapter.

He clarified that, contrary to social‑media reports, only one UI student was missing after contact was lost with the group.

“The union has initiated the necessary engagements to ascertain the facts surrounding the situation and has established contact with relevant religious organisations and security agencies to facilitate appropriate intervention.”

“We wish to clarify that reports claiming that eight UI students are missing are inaccurate.”

“Tomisin is the only University of Ibadan student currently unaccounted for in the incident,” he added.

Adeboye said the student’s disappearance became apparent when she failed to sit for her faculty examinations scheduled for Monday and Tuesday.

He added that another UI student from the Department of Music, who also attended the conference, had returned safely.

UI Director of Public Relations Mrs Joke Akinpelu confirmed that the institution was aware of the incident but had not been informed about the trip.

She said the event occurred on Saturday and that she was the only UI student abducted, countering viral claims that eight UI students were taken.

“The student left the university without officially notifying the institution of her destination,” she said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that students and Scripture Union members have called for prayers and urgent efforts to secure the victim’s release.
