The United States announced new economic sanctions on Thursday against Cuba’s president, his immediate family, and members of the Castro family. The move is part of Washington’s ongoing effort to increase pressure on the island’s communist government.
Targets include the son and a grandson of former president Raúl Castro, who, although no longer in an official role, remains influential in shaping Cuba’s future. President Miguel Díaz‑Canel, his wife, and his stepson were also sanctioned by the Treasury Department, along with the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and several other entities.
Although the United States has maintained an embargo on Cuba for decades, the Trump administration has intensified its pressure in recent months, openly discussing the possibility of taking control of the island. A de facto fuel blockade has worsened Cuba’s energy crisis and strained its already fragile economy.
The latest Treasury actions follow an earlier 2025 measure that restricted visas for the Cuban president and other senior officials. Trump has repeatedly suggested that Cuba could be the next country to succumb to U.S. pressure after Venezuela.
