On Tuesday, six members of the House of Representatives announced that they were leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read letters from the lawmakers to the chamber, explaining their reasons for leaving. The six representatives—Adebayo Adepoju, Adedeji Stanley Olajide, Ojo Sunday, Najeem Oyedeji, Folajimi Oyekunle, and Abbas Adigun—cited a persistent leadership crisis, internal divisions, unresolved disputes, and legal battles within the PDP as the main factors behind their decision.
In their letters, the lawmakers said that they had consulted extensively with constituents and political stakeholders before making the move, and that they believed the switch was necessary to ensure effective representation.
Etanebene Benedict, who had previously defected from the Labour Party to the PDP, also joined the PDP. He said that the Labour Party’s executive structure had been dissolved, leaving members without recognised officials to engage with during the nomination process. He added that many party leaders were openly supporting President Bola Tinubu, which made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the Labour Party.
Auwalu Gwalabe of Bauchi State announced that he would leave the PDP for the APM, effective May 4.
In a related development, former Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda formally resigned from his position after defecting from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Chinda, who has recently been named the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 Rivers State election, informed the House of his resignation, ending his tenure as leader of the opposition caucus in the Green Chamber.
