Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated a fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles in Kano State, aiming to broaden access to affordable and cleaner transport across northern Nigeria.
The first phase of the program introduced 15 CNG‑powered vehicles, including ten fully CNG units and five dual‑fuel models that can operate on either petrol or gas, as well as seven electric vehicles. In addition, 200 CNG‑powered tricycles were launched to support mass transit in the region.
Senator Hassan Hadejia, the Vice President’s Deputy Chief of Staff, explained that activating the CNG programme in the north would maximise impact because the area hosts the largest transportation network in West Africa.
Shettima praised Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his commitment and for creating an enabling environment ahead of the project’s formal rollout.
Governor Yusuf reiterated his administration’s willingness to work with the federal government, the Presidential Initiative on CNG (PI‑CNG), the electric‑vehicle programme, and credible private investors to strengthen the transportation and energy sectors.
He also highlighted that Kano State will continue to offer policies that foster business growth, economic expansion, and job creation.
In his remarks, the governor thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for launching the initiative, noting that it will significantly lower transportation costs and improve mobility for residents.
Barrister Ismael Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative and EV programme, said that President Tinubu is aware of the economic burden caused by the removal of fuel subsidies and is committed to providing Nigerians with cheaper, sustainable energy alternatives.
Ahmed added that plans are underway to establish CNG stations in every senatorial district of Kano to ensure widespread access.
Representatives from the governors of Jigawa and Katsina states also spoke at the event, urging the rapid extension of the CNG initiative to their states, claiming it would reduce transportation expenses and accelerate regional economic development.
