Veteran US tennis star Serena Williams has revealed that her decision to return to competition was driven by a desire for her children to watch her play.
The 44‑year‑old American legend will compete in a professional tournament for the first time in almost four years next week at Queen’s Club in London.
The 23‑time Grand Slam champion will return to the HSBC Championships at Queen’s Club, partnering teenage prodigy Victoria Mboko in doubles.

“This whole journey is no pressure, I’ve had enough pressure, it’s about so many elements,” Williams said in a press conference previewing the event.
“My kids getting to see me play, Olympia is older, an athlete is the best thing you can be in the highest place. Having an opportunity to do that one last time is exciting.”
“For singles? I can’t say yeah, I can’t say no, I would probably need to train more. That’s not my journey now.”
“I don’t need to win, I’ve won more than most people in their whole lives. For me, it’s not important to me, I have to remind myself of that, I don’t have anything to lose. Everything here is to gain.”
Williams, who comes from a famous family that includes sister Venus, father Richard, and husband Alex Ohanian, said they were initially surprised by her decision to play again but have since embraced the new chapter in her life.

The eight‑time Wimbledon champion explained: “I was talking to a few people, chatting about different possibilities, kept talking and talking… why not? For a lack of a better explanation.”
“Everyone is so supportive, everyone is like, ‘What are you thinking?’ It’s summer, the kids are out of school, perfect time to get out and have fun and see what happens.”
