Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele announced that the Senate Committee on Constitution Review will submit its final report on the proposed creation of state police to the chamber for consideration and approval before the end of the week.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Bamidele explained that the move is part of the National Assembly’s strategy to tackle the country’s insecurity challenges.
The lawmaker, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Constitution Review, said that once the National Assembly approves the proposal, it will be forwarded to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for ratification.
“We came to the conclusion that we’re going to pass the constitutional amendment in respect to making provision for state police, and I can tell you as of today that, that will come to creation this very week because there’s no need to allow any further delay,” he said.
According to him, federal lawmakers have held several meetings in recent weeks with President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu, and other stakeholders to discuss the proposed state policing framework.
